Dates: Friday through Sunday August 11-13, 2006
The 2006 Arklahoma Shootout was a tremendous success. In its third installment, the overall competition has strengthened top to bottom with participating teams. With interest increasing as well, the tournament might grow to 16 teams by next year.
Congratulations to the OKC Ameristars for winning the tournament championship with a 6-4 victory over the Fayetteville Cubs in a hard fought battle. The Ameristars reached the championship game by winning all three of their pool games by scores of 11-6 (Black Sox), 11-3 (White Sox), and 20-5 (NEAMABL All Stars). The Fayetteville Cubs had a more winding road to travel to reach the final game with an early loss to the Bentonville Dodgers (3-2), a 7-2 win over the Tulsa Barracudas, and a forfeit win over the NEA Royals (who failed to show due to a house fire). The Cubs allowed the fewest runs against to claim the top spot in the pool.
A more in-depth report of the game is forthcoming, but Tournament MVP is John Tointigh of the OKC Ameristars who smacked some 7 doubles over the weekend. Matt Bottoms of the Bentonville Dodgers wins the 2006 Home Run Derby. Bottoms and Richie Connor also of the Dodgers both hit 6 home runs on the day, but Bottoms topped Conner with a ground rule double in a 5-swing playoff.
Thanks to all participants and their families for coming to Veterans Park this weekend to help us celebrate the great game of baseball in a family-friendly environment. Your efforts allowed us to raise a few dollars for a very active charity organization, Champions for Kids. I will be making our contribution to that organization at the end of the month. We had a nice turnout of fans despite the heat over the weekend and please know that your attendance did not go unnoticed. I would also like to thank BUNWA and our other volunteer officials for working our tournament. I was pleased with the overall professionalism of the officials. Lastly, thanks go to Rick Stocker and the City of Rogers Parks and Recreation for their efforts getting fields ready to play (especially Friday night after a heavy rain).
Congratulations once again not only to the Ameristars, but also to all of our participating teams on a great weekend of baseball.
I look forward to working with you all next season.
